Both Finland and Sweden are known as design hubs, with many internationally renowned designers. However, nowadays a designer’s profession entails much more than it used to. Designers are often creative directors or CEOs for their own company, and collaborate with other professionals, such as artists and architects. Cities utilize designers in city planning and design of public services. The City of Helsinki markets itself as a design capital, and has recently appointed its first Chief of Design. The city is a pioneer in utilizing design skills, especially when it comes to public service planning. Even businesses have seen the value of using designer’s knowledge in creating user-friendly products.

How can designers juggle the new multifaceted designer-entrepreneur-creative director roles? What does a collaboration between a designer and an artist look like? Why do cities and companies need designers and design skills?

This, and much more will be discussed at a panel including Laura Väinölä, graphic designer and Design Forum Finland‘s Young Designer of the Year 2016, Karoliina Hellberg, painter, Anne Stenros, Chief Design Officer of the City of Helsinki and Jonas Pettersson, CEO and founder of Form Us With Love. The discussion is moderated bySalka Hallström Bornold, Deputy Editor-in-Chief of Form magazine. The seminar is organized by Finlandsinstitutet and Svensk Form.

The panel discussion is followed by the vernissage of ‘The Tower of Presence’ exhibition, by Laura Väinöla and Karoliina Hellberg. The exhibition is opened by Finland’s Ambassador to Sweden Matti Anttonen, and it marks the launch of Finlandsinstitutet’s program for Finland’s 100-year celebration. Read more here (in swedish)

Laura Väinöla, graphic designer and Design Forum Finland’s Young Designer of the Year 2016, is most known as the designer, founder and creative director of Flora & Laura – ”The flower shop that doesn’t exist”. Karoliina Hellberg is a painter and one of Finland’s most interesting contemporary artists. Her art has been displayed in galleries in Finland and abroad, as well as in fashion brand Samuji’s collection, among others. Anne Stenros, Chief Design Officer of the City of Helsinki, is a Doctor of Science and Architect SAFA, with a background as a design director for KONE and IDBM Program Director at Aalto University. Jonas Pettersson is CEO and founder of Form us With Love. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Linneuniversitetet design school in Kalmar, Pettersson has worked hands on with some of the most influential brands and companies in Scandinavian and international design.
