Spill to Frame

Spill till Stomme (Waste to Frame) is a project that explores alternative uses for waste products from the Swedish sawmill industry. Defective rough-sawn timber and offcuts from the production of construction timber are reused to build a pavilion with accompanying seating.

The pavilion consists of three arches with a diameter of five meters, constructed from hundreds of small pieces of spruce. The parts are joined together with wood-to-wood connections and plywood connectors. The bases of the arches are made from self-produced glued laminated timber, where defective rough-sawn timber has been used as slats and glued together to form larger dimensions.

The seating furniture placed in the middle of the arches has a frame made of cross-laminated timber from the same recycled material and is covered with rough-sawn boards along its edge. The top of the furniture consists of a cube floor, where the cubes come from waste from the company's own production of arches, which means that even secondary waste has been reused.

The design process was based on the dimensions and qualities available in the waste material donated by Derome's sawmill industry. Inspiration was drawn from historical waste wood constructions, such as Kubbhus and HB-balken. A parametric script has been used to adapt the design to the dimensions of the wood, enabling manufacture using simple tools and machines.

The project demonstrates how defective wood can be reused without advanced technology. Through a precise design process and careful planning, irregular dimensions can be refined into structures and furniture with a significantly higher value than the material's conventional use as fuel.
