Macro fibers – Unused wool against oil pollution

My work explores Swedish waste wool as a sustainable and biodegradable solution for cleaning small boat harbors from oil and heavy metals. Through studies of the structure of wool, I have developed Macro Fibers, a recycled wool product that absorbs 30 times its weight in oil, can be reused, and whose design, inspired by nudibranchs, warns marine species during remediation.

Jury motivation

At first glance, it is difficult to guess what Macro Fibers is, but upon further explanation, it is easy to be impressed. The project investigates how an unused material resource from the meat industry can, with the help of its built-in properties, clean small boat harbors from oil and heavy metals. Wool can absorb up to 30 times its weight in oil when submerged in the sea. The design has also been developed in collaboration with marine biologists to ensure that it interacts with the marine ecosystem. The project is an inspiring example of how local, sustainable resources can make a big difference to cleaner aquatic environments.
