Islandsberg – The Site of a Lighthouse
In our work, we explore the transformative nature of small-scale architecture linked to cultural heritage and place. Using the "deep mapping" method, we have analyzed Islandsberg's old lighthouse site in Bohuslän—a place rich in natural values, stories, and physical isolation—and developed a proposal for how the area can be carefully made accessible and enhanced.
The project will result in a new hiking trail with associated buildings: two overnight cabins, a sheep shed, a wind shelter, and an entrance building. The architecture is rooted in the craft traditions of the area and built in wood, with detailed studies of the construction and facade. The design is based on the local context, ecologically, historically, and socially, and focuses on protecting and enhancing the character of the site.
Physical models on a scale of 1:1 and smaller formats have been used to understand construction, light, encounters, and materiality. These models concretize the connection between idea and place and function both as tools in the process and as a means of communicating proposals.
The design is intended to be implemented with minimal environmental impact and to contribute to the ecological restoration of the landscape. At the same time, new ways are being created for people to experience, understand, and take responsibility for the continued presence of cultural heritage in our contemporary world.
