MONI

How can we provide reassurance to expectant parents who live far away from maternity care facilities? I have developed a service that facilitates communication between pregnant women and midwives in the final stages of pregnancy. The product is designed to be easy to use at home, even by people with no medical experience.

Jury motivation

Despite its small size, MONI carries a strong social critique and highlights the potential of design as both a problem solver and a force for change. For those who live far from central services, pregnancy and childbirth become not only a time of anticipation, but also a logistical challenge. By communicating with maternity care on the way to the maternity ward, MONI creates a safer journey when the distance to the nearest hospital is long. In MONI, we see a design proposal that we would have preferred to avoid, but which is nevertheless a good example of how design, through thoughtfulness and creativity, can create security when politics fails.
