Reading Reeds

Structural and sculptural forms were created from reeds using both experimental and traditional techniques. The aim of the project is to celebrate and explore an underused material in the design industry, as well as to highlight a more ecological awareness of the use of naturally occurring materials that are abundant in Sweden.

Jury motivation

Two stools that use reed in two different ways. The Thatched Stool is reminiscent of a roof structure with an inner supporting frame and an outer shell of reed. The Terracotta Reed Stool uses reeds, a brittle and inherently weak material, which are bound together to form the stool's load-bearing core. The beauty lies in the contrast between the two materials: one planed, processed, and cut, the other used in its natural, harvested form. Structure and geometric order meet the complexity and random repetition of organic form.
