Framing Nature

The competition entry Framing Nature draws inspiration from traditional Swedish log houses, combined with architectural elements reminiscent of Chinese temples.

The site is part of the Arboretum in Gothenburg Botanical Garden, where Asian trees were planted in the 1950s. What makes the area unique is the unusual mix of tree species in a natural forest environment, creating a landscape characterized by variety and character.

At the same time, the site is part of Änggårdsbergen, a nature reserve with high ecological value and a rich cultural heritage. The landscape was previously used as pasture land until the 19th century, giving the area a multidimensional character.
By combining traditional Nordic timber architecture with references to Asian temple buildings, a nature center has been created that is anchored in the surrounding landscape, a Swedish forest environment with Asian elements. The two Falun red building volumes, the tower and the timber house, interact with the terrain and reinforce the topography of the site.

The tower is located higher up the slope and offers sweeping views of the forest and the city. The log cabin is located in the lower part, where it blends in with the damp valley's stream, rocks, moss, and marshland. Together, the buildings create an architectural expression that highlights the physical, ecological, and cultural values of the site.
