NJORD

What does it mean to drown?
Drowning means that a liquid prevents breathing, regardless of whether the person survives or not. Although water in Sweden is often associated with swimming, fishing, and outdoor activities, many people die every year in drowning accidents, 70 people in 2022.

Who is it designed for?
NJORD is designed to save lives regardless of weight or body shape. It is suitable for people aged 7 and above, as most children in Sweden have learned to swim by this age, and up to adults. Since most drowning victims are men, it is important that the buoy works well for both wider and heavier bodies, while also being suitable for younger and smaller people.

How can radio-controlled lifebuoys improve lifesaving in water accidents?
NJORD complements existing equipment by eliminating the need for throwing ability or for anyone to venture into the water, which can be risky. It is easily operated with a handheld control from land, inspired by game controllers for intuitive use. A built-in screen displays real-time images and position, enabling fast and safe rescue operations even under stressful conditions.

Relatable character
The design includes warning lights that function as "eyes" and create a face-like expression through pareidolia, the human tendency to see faces in objects. A neutral and alert expression creates a stronger connection between the user and the equipment. This gives both rescuers and those in distress a sense of security, like having a colleague by their side.
