The Carbon Cycle
Through an exploratory design process, the project investigates how to convey the importance of carbon in our society through storytelling, and how illustration and spatial design can create an experience that makes the viewer want to stay and reflect.
This is represented by a fire game, also known as an angel game—a turbine that spins with the help of an open flame. The figures in the fire game tell the story of the life of a carbon atom from a human perspective. The project aims to stimulate dialogue about ecological sustainability, the cycles of the earth, and humanity's place in it.
The project has evolved through associative drawing and an exploration of charcoal in various forms.
The story has several layers that can be read separately or together. Each character has its own symbolism, allowing the viewer to create their own narrative by reading the story from different perspectives.
I believe we need more stories that give nature a voice—stories that don't point fingers, but remind us that we are also nature, that we are connected, living in symbiosis with everything else—and that we must become better at seeing the consequences of our actions.
Where does the coal end and where do we begin?
Is there something that holds the whole world together, hair-thin lines like an invisible spider web stretching between all points, every square millimeter of the physicality of the universe?
