Increased demands for sustainability and circular flows are placing higher demands on the furniture and interior design industry. By optimizing resources and increasing the use of locally produced bio-based materials, we can keep raw materials, production, skills and jobs in Sweden and reduce the climate footprint. Sweden has a strong furniture tradition and is known for designing, producing and selling beautiful, functional furniture, especially in wood. The Swedish furniture industry has a large export share and is internationally recognized. There is a growing demand for local wood raw material and a drive to produce more in Swedish wood. Meeting this demand requires transformation and new business models within the value chain. The circular value chain includes all actors from the forest industry to furniture manufacturers and interior designers, as well as those working with reuse and recycling. Automation and digitalization offer great opportunities for the furniture and interior design industry. The wood industry is constantly evolving to increase resource efficiency and the degree of processing, which can contribute to long-term sustainable development.
Today, between 10 and 20 percent of a log is used in our furniture and interior products. The remainder becomes by-products instead of being processed and used as a more permanent material. 70% of all sawn Swedish softwood raw material is exported, while only 1% is processed in the furniture and interior design industry. The majority of the hardwood used by Swedish companies for production is imported from Europe and North America. To achieve a long-term sustainable furniture and interior design industry with an increased share of local bio-based resources by 2030, we need a much closer dialog between our and neighboring industries and a deeper knowledge of the possibilities of bio-based materials.
Björn Nordin, a furniture maker and versatile expert with roots in a self-sufficient farm in Björsjö, has a unique combination of practical and strategic experience. As Head of Architecture and Design at Swedish Wood, he developed a groundbreaking roadmap for a resource-efficient and bio-based furniture and interior design industry. Today, Björn is CEO of Svensk Form and a sought-after lecturer and inspirer.
