The "Fruit Bowl" Table – Carl Martinson

"Fruktskål" is a sculptural table by Carl Martinson in which the historic intarsia technique is used to create narrative visual spaces in wood veneer. Through the use of different types of wood, color variations, and patterns, the piece unites furniture and imagery in a work that straddles the boundaries between function, craftsmanship, and contemporary art.

Jury motivation

Through a distinctive and artistically refined approach, the historic marquetry technique is given new life in contemporary furniture design. With a keen sense of materials, visual language, and craftsmanship, poetic and narrative visual spaces are created in wood veneer. The fruit bowl was awarded the Utmärkt Svensk Form 2026 prize for its innovative way of combining art, craftsmanship, and practical function within a contemporary Swedish furniture tradition, while respecting the natural properties of the materials.
